Hello! My name is Jennifer Cady and I am the Director of the Upward Bound Programs at Morehead State University. I have been the UB Director at MSU since February of 1989. Yep…that’s over 20 years! Before coming to Morehead, I worked with TRIO Talent Search at the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University. And before that I worked in substance abuse counseling for a community mental health center.
I grew up in Winchester (Clark County), KY and returned to live there a few years ago. I’ve also lived in Morehead, Clarksville, TN, and Harlan County, KY. I think I’m still most comfortable living in a small town.
I went to high school in Clark County. Although it was tough for me to decide on a college, I eventually settled on UK. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Kentucky. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology (’79) and my graduate degree is in Social Work (’86).
Hobbies & Such
I have lots of interests. These include: reading, traveling, watching college basketball, playing the piano, visiting with family and friends, and being actively involved with TRIO professional associations. I just never seem to have enough free time to get it all in!
My favorite vacation – so far – was a trip to Alaska last year. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. I’ve posted some pictures from the trip on my Facebook page – you’ll have to take a look.
I’m also creating a list of what I want to do when I have more time for hobbies: I want to play jazz piano, travel to Greece and Europe and Asia, read, take classes in floral design and Spanish, and learn how to converse in another language. I would really like to do something creative (quilting or painting or pottery); unfortunately, I’m just not that creative!
What I do with Upward Bound
I’m not sure how to succinctly answer that question! I do a little bit of everything, but my primary responsibilities are managing the budgets, writing grants, supervising staff, planning (everything about UB involves planning!) and evaluating the programs. When I get the opportunity, I really enjoy visiting schools with the other UB staff. I absolutely LOVE Upward Bound and feel very blessed that I have the opportunity to work with such a great program and a terrific group of staff and students.
What I enjoy most about UB
It’s hard to say what my most favorite part of UB is -I think it’s all pretty terrific. I love working with teenagers and college students. It is wonderful to watch UB students “grow up” – from a high school freshman or sophomore to a college graduate! I believe that the opportunities the program provides to students are truly exceptional and wish that we could have even more students in the program!
